Show 18 – ‘Journey of Belonging’


In this show, Jeff Stockton, Nikiah Seeds and John-Luke Edwards explore the concept of ‘belonging’ from an animist, spiritual and shamanic stance; what is ‘it’ that we strive to belong to, how do we engage in the ‘striving’ and what is it like not to belong?

They are joined by, Annie Spencer and Ursula Van Graan, after reflecting on traditional stories and song of the Sagh’ic Tradition, along with the mystery of the bee hive and honey.


The Gathering’ is one of the Sagh’ic Traditional stories, telling of an ancient time when the ‘gods’ descended to earth to share their wisdom with humans.


Ursula Van Graan is from South Africa is an initiated Shaman who has studied the philosophy and application of ancient and holistic Energy applications of African mainly ancient Kmt (Kemetic), Native American and European cosmologies. In addition to Meditation, Buddhist and Yoga teachings, she applies this knowledge in practical empowerment workshops, Shaman and Journey classes, Reiki and Yoga training and counseling.


Annie Spencer is a ceremonialist and workshop leader with an Oxford MA and diploma in Humanistic Psychology, has been running groups and trainings for over 25 years including the groundbreaking Women’s Mysteries courses. She has co-founded a number of spiritual and healing initiatives within her community including Openings, the Bath based centre for therapies and group work; The Sacred Trust, which has brought many indigenous teachers to Britain; and her own Hartwell, centre for shamanic and ceremonial ways. Her writing on earth mysteries, women’s mysteries and ceremony can be regularly found in many major publications. She has worked for ten years on an initiation ceremony in Vermont USA and co designs camps for teenagers with Circle of Life Rediscovery, bringing earth based spiritual traditions to the youth of today. She has been making ceremony for young people’s movement into adulthood; marriages & handfastings; and women’s movement through the menopause for the past ten years.

We Belong’ by Pat Benatar is an American singer-songwriter and four-time Grammy Award winner. She is a mezzo-soprano. She has had commercial success, particularly in the United States and Canada. During the 1980s, Benatar had two RIAA-certified Multi-Platinum albums, five RIAA-certified Platinum albums, three RIAA-certified Gold albums, 17 Billboard chartings and 15 of them being Top 40 singles, including the Top 10 hits, "Hit Me with Your Best Shot", "Love Is a Battlefield", "We Belong" and "Invincible". Other popular singles include "Heartbreaker", "Treat Me Right", "Fire and Ice", "Promises in the Dark", "Shadows of the Night", and "All Fired Up". Benatar was one of the most heavily played artists in the early days of MTV. She was the first female artist to play on MTV, performing "You Better Run". The song is from her album ‘Tropico’ on the ‘Chrysalis’ label.

Belonging” by Lauri Shainsky

Lauri is a Shamanic Sound Healer, with a thriving practice in Eagle Creek, OR. She teaches Sound Healing for LightSong School of Shamanic Studies & Energy Medicine, and is an elder Council Member for the School. Lauri carries a bundle of traditional ceremonial songs, which she sings with her shamanic community and her extended Lakota family.
